The New Academy is a project to stimulate a non-captive academic movement. It is to frankly explore questions that modern mainstream academia cannot. This is a humanities-focused academic undertaking. This site covers five main subjects; the Fine Arts, History, Journalism, Philosophy, and Psychology. We subsume areas such as sociology, and other soft sciences, under one of these more general subjects (history, in the case of sociology). These newer subjects represent a departure from classical methods; we subject this departure to scrutiny, here.
The Fine Arts
The Fine Arts includes all subjects related to the experiences created for their own sake. Because the arts are experienced, they are related to the senses. Therefore, each sense corresponds to a distinct artistic tradition. Music is art related to hearing. Artwork is art related to vision. The Culinary arts are related to taste. Literature is related to the imagination. In addition, there are also multimedia projects, such as theater (literature, artwork, and music), and dance (artwork and music). Only the sense of touch does not have an artistic tradition, although, arguably, fashion combines both touch and artwork.
History
History is the study of all events that have occurred. We advocate a multi-modal approach towards the study of history. Ideally, the historian should combine Cartesian fact based studies, Hegelian studies of narrative and change, and Heideggerian reconstructions of Dasein. A historian who contributes to this project must avoid applying current narratives to past events.
Journalism
Journalism is the discipline related to the presentation of current and anticipated events. Today, no one trusts the news media, whether that be in the form of print, radio, television, or even the internet. The past decade has irreparably damaged the credibility of all of our news institutions. Finance capital has enabled particular interests to capture the news narrative, and the public is well aware of this. In view of the fact that the lines between fact and opinion have been blurred, this movement seeks to establish a form of journalism in which the journalist clearly delineates the presentation of fact and editorializing, yet is explicitly encouraged to communicate both.
Philosophical Subjects
Philosophy is the study of the general, and how it applies to the specific. Consequently, this study encompasses five main areas. Aesthetics is the study of individual and social sensibility, including both the subject and the object; it overlaps with the study of the fine arts. Epistemology is the study of knowledge and cognition (including cognitive science); it overlaps with the study of psychology. Ethics is the study of normative standards and preferences; it overlaps with the study of journalism. Politics is the study of human group dynamics and the state; it overlaps with history. Being (including metaphysics) is the study of abstract principles, such as logic and phenomenology; it informs all other fields of study, including the hard sciences, which fall outside of the scope of this project.
Psychological Subjects
Psychological subjects examine the human mind, as well as the human unconscious, in particular. We encourage psychologists and psychiatrists of every field to contribute to this project, including, but not limited to, depth psychology, industrial psychology, personality psychology, abnormal psychology, and social psychology.
